About Kerewong Trekking Horses
Southern Cross Horse Treks mainly uses Australian pure bred Arabian horses, specifically schooled and trained for long-distance trail riding for experienced riders.
Bred from successful endurance bloodlines, the high quality of the Kerewong horses is appreciated by the experienced horse riders during multiple days trail riding on NSW Mid North Coast of Australia.
The horses' wellbeing and safety is Southern Cross Horse Treks main concern and riders can be assured that all trail horses are cared for to the highest standard.
The Horses
Almost all the trekking horses of Southern Cross Horse Treks are Australian-bred Arabian horses, a high spirited breed well known for it's gracious beauty and movement, distinctive headshape, stamina, agility, intelligence and tough yet sensitive nature. The Arabian horses' agility, endurance, hardiness, adaptability to the Australian climate conditions, people- and work-friendly attitude and temperament make them excellent and interesting horses for multi-day long distance trailriding through challenging terrain.
Arabian Character & Spirit
Among some people the Arabian horse may have a reputation for their nervous, high-strung disposition and for being "difficult" horses, but the Southern Cross Horse Treks horses are proud ambassadors for this fantastic breed. Kerewong horse riding visitors will experience that the Arabians' combination of intelligence, willingness to please, energy and sensitivity, if handled with respect, understanding, plenty of space and regular work to channel their energy, makes for a willing, relaxed and responsive Arabian riding horse.
For the many fans of this breed it is no secret that nothing beats the feeling of riding a forward and free moving Endurance Arabian horse on endless quiet Australian bush trails or the sense of freedom during a long beach gallop with the Arabian horse's lightness, ease and speed. Check the Rider Reviews to read what our horse riding guests say about the horses at Southern Cross Horse Treks.
Long Distance Trekking Horses Trained For Endurance
The Southern Cross Horse Treks horses have been carefully selected and schooled in basic arena work and then trained and conditioned for long distance trail riding and endurance. As a result all horses are forward and responsive. Kerewong's Arabian horses were bred from top endurance bloodlines and all horses have completed 40 km (25 miles) endurance rides as part of their training for Southern Cross Horse Treks. We even have a few Arabian Show Champions (Led & Ridden Classes) among our herd of horses!
Trail Horse Breed, Height, Riding Style, Saddles and Tack
The Arabian is a strong, hardy and light framed horse breed, of generally small height (between 14 and 15 hands). Southern Cross Horse Treks added a few taller and more solid horses to cater for horse riders who require a bigger or stronger horse.
The Southern Cross Horse Treks horses are trained to be ridden in English style, on a loose rein or light contact.
Horse tack are lightweight Australian made endurance saddles and snaffle bits or bitless bridles (gentle hackamores or rope halters).
Kerewong - Horse Farm Environment, Pastures And Horse Care
The horses live in a herd outside year-round, in large undulating fields on the 60 acre "Kerewong" horse property in Lorne on the Mid North Coast of NSW Australia. Stables are available but rarely need to be used.
The horses' well-being and safety is Southern Cross Horse Treks main concern and riders can be assured that all trailriding horses (working and retired) are maintained are cared for to the highest standard. The original group of horses, that began the Australian Horseback Riding Adventure Holiday Tours with Kathy in 2004, are now close to or already enjoying their well-deserved retirement in the extensive fields at Kerewong Horse Farm, where horse riders will stay during their week of horse riding with Southern Cross Horse Treks Australia.
Unforgettable Horse Riding Memories
It is acknowledged that - in combination with welcoming hospitality, stunning scenery and adventurous yet safe horse riding - good horses are the most important aspect of your horsetrek holiday experience and Kathy (your tour guide & host) is proud of the high quality of her beautiful Arabian trekking horses. All the horses are in excellent condition and are handled with respect and fairness. There are periods of hard work, but they live a happy, active life in their familiar herd of horses.
All Kerewong horses are conditioned and fit for their job, share the workload, get rested according to needs, receive high quality food, hoof-, veterinary and general care. First class endurance saddles and tack are used. Southern Cross Horse Treks is of the opinion that all horses thrive with work, having a "job", and regular exercise. Riding forward, willing and responsive trail horses that have a long, healthy and happy life will mark your unforgettable Australian horse riding holiday experience with Southern Cross Horse Treks.
